The Jardín de Cactus, or Cactus Garden, is one of Lanzarote’s most distinctive attractions, offering a blend of art, nature, and design. Created by the island’s beloved artist César Manrique, this garden showcases over 4,500 cacti from more than 450 species, all set within a former quarry that has been transformed into a stunning terraced landscape.
What to See and Do:
- Manrique’s Vision: The garden’s design is a testament to Manrique’s ability to harmonize architecture with nature. The cacti are arranged in circular terraces that mimic the shape of a volcanic crater, creating a sense of order amid the rugged environment.
- Variety of Species: Wander through the garden to discover a wide variety of cacti from around the world, including massive candelabra cacti, tiny succulents, and everything in between. Information plaques provide details about each species, making it an educational experience as well.
- Windmill: At the top of the garden stands a restored traditional windmill, which adds to the garden’s charm and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. Climb up to the mill for a bird’s-eye view of the garden and the surrounding landscape.
- Café and Shop: The garden also features a small café where you can relax with a drink or snack while enjoying the scenery. Don’t forget to visit the shop, which offers local crafts and products inspired by the garden.
Insider Tip: Visit in the morning or late afternoon when the light is softer, casting beautiful shadows across the garden. The colors of the cacti and the volcanic rock are especially vibrant at these times.
